Loose parts, puzzles, games, and intriguing materials for tabletop play create a rich canvas for the exploration of numeracy and mathematical concepts. From the abstract to the absolute hands-on tools engage children in active computational thinking.

Why Do You Need Loose Parts?

Loose parts are a way for kids to engage in meaningful, self-directed play. Unlike toys with instructions or predetermined outcomes, loose parts are about creativity and choice. Kids can decide what to do with them—build a tall tower, make a pattern, or use them as props in imaginative play. This kind of play encourages kids to think outside the box, solve problems, and develop ideas.

Because loose parts have no rules or limitations, they help children develop confidence and independence. Kids who play with loose parts learn to make decisions, take risks, and try new things in a low-stakes environment. It’s a great way to build resilience and adaptability and foster a love of learning for life. Plus, manipulating the materials helps kids understand basic STEM concepts like cause and effect, balance, and symmetry without realizing it.

Adding Loose Parts to the Classroom

Introducing loose parts into your classroom will change the way children learn. These materials offer endless opportunities for exploration and discovery, making lessons more interactive and fun. Whether it’s a math lesson on patterns or a science activity on gravity, loose parts can be incorporated into any subject to enhance learning. Kids are naturally curious and love experimenting with loose parts, so these products are a must in the classroom.

Loose parts are also great for promoting collaboration and communication among students. As kids work together to build or create with these materials, they learn to share ideas, listen to others, and work as a team. This builds social skills and fosters a sense of community and teamwork in the classroom. Because loose parts are so versatile, they can be used to meet the needs of all learners, making them a great tool for differentiated instruction.

Loose Parts You’ll Love

If you want to bring more creativity and exploration into your classroom, loose parts are the way to go. Imagine children diving into a bin of Wooden Stacking Discs, figuring out how to balance them into towers. It’s fun for them to learn about balance and symmetry without realizing they’re doing it.

Then there are the Rainbow Pegs—these bright, colorful pegs can be used in many ways. Kids can create patterns, sort them by color, or even incorporate them into larger building projects. It’s all about letting their imaginations run wild while they develop key skills like sorting and color recognition.

Pebble Animals and Wooden Pebbles bring a tactile element to play. The different textures and shapes encourage kids to explore and imagine stories or games around these simple objects.

Adding a variety of loose parts to your classroom makes learning more engaging and gives kids the freedom to explore and learn at their own pace.

Jaci I.

Director of Early Childhood Education @ Congregation Beth Elohim

We have set up a sensory room with many of Kodo’s materials–light table, magnet wall, wind tunnel–and it’s a favorite space for all of our classes to visit. Parents and professional visitors are quite impressed with the uniqueness and open-ended aspect of the materials.

I met with the founder many years ago at a NAEYC conference when he was just starting and had just a few products and was immediately impressed with his understanding of how young children learn. It has been a pleasure to watch the company grow while maintaining the integrity of your knowledge of how young children learn best through active participation and exploration of their environment.

Cathy H.

Teacher @ Tennie Russell Primary School

Our little learners are finding new ways to explore through light, movement, engineering and more. Adding the wind tunnel to our lab has been a game changer in terms of excitement level and inquiry. Students eagerly explore how things blow when the tunnel is adjusted to varying angles, and they discover the differences in materials and how well they move through and out of the tunnel. We expanded our engineering/building area by increasing choices with the Swiss Ramp Stands and the Discovery Ramps set. In doing that, we sparked a higher interest in force and motion, including problem-solving on how to stop said motion. These are just some of the items we purchased from Kodo Kids with our grant, and we look forward to seeing our young minds at work as we continue to expand our STEAM lab.

Anna D.

Nature Preschool Teacher @ Oak Ridge Elementary

The Outdoor Ramps have been a fantastic addition to support outdoor learning at Oak Ridge Elementary. Students in preschool through 1st grade have been able to use the ramps in multiple environments, including indoors, on our playground, in our forest outdoor classroom, and in our prairie outdoor classroom. In addition, all students, regardless of their abilities, have been able to participate in ramp play. Students who are wheelchair-bound are able to participate in ramp play with their classmates due to having longer length sections that reach the child’s chair height.
