Ramps & Fulcrums Set

The addition of one or more fulcrum allows children to change ramps into pieces that provide motion, incline or elevation to ramp courses. The fulcrums act as “feet” and are designed to easily fit onto our ramps. Use one in the center of a ramp to create a lever and fulcrum; a ramp that will tilt from one side to another as a ball or other object travels over it. Use one of each size fulcrum on the ends of the ramp to create an inclined plane. Use two of the fulcrum feet positioned near each end of the ramp to create a bridge-like piece that can span over another ramp or structure below it. This multifunctional set of ramps and fulcrums can be used indoors, outdoors, in your block play center, sandpit, STEM Lab, or hallway. Combine the set with Kodo’s Outdoor Ramps, Pump Works or Tunnels. Encourage creativity and support problem-solving skill development by using classroom materials such as balls, toy cars & trains, natural materials, sand, slurry and water.

*Wood Balls shown in images are sold separately.

Q. Do the Fulcrums fit on Outdoor Ramps I purchased years ago?

They will be a little loose but can still act as supports for making inclines and bridges with Kodo’s 3″ wide outdoor ramps*. They may not fit snuggly enough for the ramp to act as a lever and fulcrum. *Fulcrums have been designed to fit Kodo’s 2023 Outdoor Ramps.

Q. Can preschool children put the fulcrums onto ramps themselves.

They’ll likely need help from an adult at first. With a little practice, they’ll be able to do it themselves. As one four-year-old told me, “This is ‘gonna take some force.”

  • Introduce the Ramps & Fulcrums Set formally during a small group experience. Or simply attach one fulcrum to one ramp for children to discover.
  • Assist toddlers and preschool children as needed when exploring how the fulcrum feet attach to the ramps.
  • Assist toddlers and preschool children as needed to test the results of attaching one fulcrum foot in the center, to the left or right of center, and on an end of a ramp.
  • Arrange the materials in an outdoor sand box or patio for children to explore freely. (Attach fulcrum feet to ramps for toddler groups.)
  • Arrange the pieces along with other types of ramps and play accessories in your Blocks, Ramps & Construction area.
  • Encourage preschool and school-age children to collect and test materials on the ramps. Assist them to record their findings using a list, graph or chart.
