From order and pattern to letter recognition, Kodo offers a unique selection of manipulatives and story construction materials for children to explore pre-reading and writing skills. We focus on the whole child and promote learning in deep and impactful ways with meaningful materials. Literacy is no exception!

Helping your child develop reading and writing skills early on can make a huge difference in their education. Our Pre-Literacy collection contains products designed to ignite a love for words, stories, and communication. These tools help little ones build the skills they need to become confident readers and writers, making learning fun, engaging, and hands-on.

Why Early Literacy is Important

Building strong reading and writing skills early in life is crucial to a child's success in school and beyond. Before kids learn to read and write independently, they go through a critical stage where they start recognizing letters, understanding sounds, and realizing that words are made up of these sounds. But it’s not just about learning the ABCs—it's about creating a love for language and stories.

Early literacy activities, like listening to stories, playing with sounds, and exploring writing, help kids see the magic in words and develop a natural curiosity about language. These experiences are the building blocks for vocabulary, comprehension, and thinking skills, laying a foundation to support their learning for years.

Bringing Pre-Literacy Tools into the Classroom

Adding pre-literacy tools to your classroom can make learning to read and write much more engaging for young children. Children who play with letters, sounds, and words through hands-on activities are more likely to get excited about learning. These tools help turn abstract literacy concepts into something they can touch and see, making the learning process more concrete and enjoyable. This interactive play can foster a classroom environment that encourages curiosity and creativity.

What’s great about these tools is that they can be used to meet each child’s individual learning needs. Every child learns at their own pace, and these products can easily be adapted to suit different stages of development. For example, some children might be ready to start writing letters, while others are still figuring out letters' sounds. Having an assortment of tools on hand means teachers can tailor their lessons to fit each student, helping every child progress at their own speed.

Pre-Literacy Products You’ll Love

Our pre-literacy collection offers a variety of tools to support the development of literacy skills in young learners. Uppercase and Lowercase Sensory Letters are a perfect place to start for helping children recognize and feel the shapes of letters, making the learning process tangible and engaging.

Similarly, Sign Language Alphabet Blocks offer a unique way for kids to learn the alphabet while exploring sign language, adding a multi-sensory dimension to literacy education.

For early writing skills, Sand Writers and Patterned Rolling Pins provide a hands-on approach to letter formation and motor skills development. Kids can trace and create patterns, making the process of learning to write fun, interactive and easy to comprehend.

Finally, the Sand Tray Light Panels and Light Lab Drawing Boards enhance visual and tactile experiences. They allow children to explore letter formation and drawing in an illuminated setting, adding an extra layer of engagement to their learning.

Add any of these products to your curriculum to help your kids understand literacy concepts in playful ways.

Director of Early Childhood Education @ Congregation Beth Elohim

We have set up a sensory room with many of Kodo’s materials–light table, magnet wall, wind tunnel–and it’s a favorite space for all of our classes to visit. Parents and professional visitors are quite impressed with the uniqueness and open-ended aspect of the materials.

I met with the founder many years ago at a NAEYC conference when he was just starting and had just a few products and was immediately impressed with his understanding of how young children learn. It has been a pleasure to watch the company grow while maintaining the integrity of your knowledge of how young children learn best through active participation and exploration of their environment.

Cathy H.

Teacher @ Tennie Russell Primary School

Our little learners are finding new ways to explore through light, movement, engineering and more. Adding the wind tunnel to our lab has been a game changer in terms of excitement level and inquiry. Students eagerly explore how things blow when the tunnel is adjusted to varying angles, and they discover the differences in materials and how well they move through and out of the tunnel. We expanded our engineering/building area by increasing choices with the Swiss Ramp Stands and the Discovery Ramps set. In doing that, we sparked a higher interest in force and motion, including problem-solving on how to stop said motion. These are just some of the items we purchased from Kodo Kids with our grant, and we look forward to seeing our young minds at work as we continue to expand our STEAM lab.

Nature Preschool Teacher @ Oak Ridge Elementary

The Outdoor Ramps have been a fantastic addition to support outdoor learning at Oak Ridge Elementary. Students in preschool through 1st grade have been able to use the ramps in multiple environments, including indoors, on our playground, in our forest outdoor classroom, and in our prairie outdoor classroom. In addition, all students, regardless of their abilities, have been able to participate in ramp play. Students who are wheelchair-bound are able to participate in ramp play with their classmates due to having longer length sections that reach the child’s chair height.
