Exploring light as a material enhances sensory play, supports preschool and elementary science curricula, and supports pre-literacy, drawing, writing, and math skills in highly engaging ways. As children explore they increase their attention spans, communicate with peers, work fine motor muscles, and practice hand-to-eye coordination skills.

Light is one of the most interesting subjects for kids, but there’s a way to make learning even more interactive for them. Light Exploration helps children explore concepts like colors, shadows, and patterns as they observe the properties of light. This hands-on approach allows them to understand how light exists in our world, with concepts like reflection and refraction becoming real before their eyes. By exploring how light reacts with different objects, kids will stay curious to learn more about these fundamental concepts.

Why Is Light Exploration Important?

Light is part of classroom learning for kids because it lays the foundation for other scientific principles to be taught later on. Studying light helps students explore concepts like energy, waves and the behavior of light.

These tools give teachers a way to make kids understand STEM concepts that are hard to teach with textbooks. Children are curious, and when they start to see how light works, they become little scientists.

Bringing Light Exploration to the Classroom

Adding Light Exploration to your classroom takes the whole learning experience to another level. It keeps the kids engaged in learning instead of bored with it. When children can actually manipulate light with their own hands using experiments with tools from Light Exploration, they see how different concepts work. This kind of learning is more effective and useful for the future, too, when kids grow up and learn more complex principles.

Light Exploration Products You’ll Love

Do you have a shelving unit in your classroom? Turn it into an active discover zone with the Shelf Toop Light Panel. The clever design allows you to keep it upright or lay it flat so kids can use it as a light surface for experiments. Whether in a preschool or school-age program, this compact solution invites children to explore light and
shadow.

Next, we have the Light Laboratory. This complete package includes a removable light panel and colorful blocks that help kids create an entire mini laboratory in the classroom. Place it in one corner of the room and watch as kids experiment with the science of light together.

For larger groups, the Spectrum Light Lab shines bright and is perfect for busy areas like libraries or common areas in schools where multiple children can play at the same time. With shelving and lockable doors for storage, everything is organized and ready to go. The Spectrum Light Lab includes both color and white light panels so kids can explore different light phenomena together.

Finally, the Light Panel adds a unique twist to light exploration by enabling children to create endless color combinations. With simple dials to adjust the intensity of red, green, and blue light, kids can visually grasp how colors mix and change.

Enhance Learning with Kodo Kids

These early years are the perfect time to get kids involved in hands-on learning with Light Exploration. They grasp concepts like shadows, colors, and light projection, making these scientific principles stick in their heads for the rest of their lives. From interactive light panels to comprehensive laboratories, our collection is crafted to stimulate inquiry and imagination.

In addition to these Light Exploration tools, don’t forget to explore our full catalog of educational products, providing even more exciting opportunities for discovery in your classroom.

Jaci I.

Director of Early Childhood Education @ Congregation Beth Elohim

We have set up a sensory room with many of Kodo’s materials–light table, magnet wall, wind tunnel–and it’s a favorite space for all of our classes to visit. Parents and professional visitors are quite impressed with the uniqueness and open-ended aspect of the materials.

I met with the founder many years ago at a NAEYC conference when he was just starting and had just a few products and was immediately impressed with his understanding of how young children learn. It has been a pleasure to watch the company grow while maintaining the integrity of your knowledge of how young children learn best through active participation and exploration of their environment.

Teacher @ Tennie Russell Primary School

Our little learners are finding new ways to explore through light, movement, engineering and more. Adding the wind tunnel to our lab has been a game changer in terms of excitement level and inquiry. Students eagerly explore how things blow when the tunnel is adjusted to varying angles, and they discover the differences in materials and how well they move through and out of the tunnel. We expanded our engineering/building area by increasing choices with the Swiss Ramp Stands and the Discovery Ramps set. In doing that, we sparked a higher interest in force and motion, including problem-solving on how to stop said motion. These are just some of the items we purchased from Kodo Kids with our grant, and we look forward to seeing our young minds at work as we continue to expand our STEAM lab.

Nature Preschool Teacher @ Oak Ridge Elementary

The Outdoor Ramps have been a fantastic addition to support outdoor learning at Oak Ridge Elementary. Students in preschool through 1st grade have been able to use the ramps in multiple environments, including indoors, on our playground, in our forest outdoor classroom, and in our prairie outdoor classroom. In addition, all students, regardless of their abilities, have been able to participate in ramp play. Students who are wheelchair-bound are able to participate in ramp play with their classmates due to having longer length sections that reach the child’s chair height.
